英語学領域

領域紹介

英語学領域は、現代言語学の文法理論を中心とした主要研究領域をカバーできる体制になっています。4名の担当教員の研究領域は、語彙論、形態論、統語論、意味論、語用論などにわたり、学生がこれらのどの分野を専門領域に選んだとしても、しかるべき研究指導が受けられるようになっています。

今日の英語学研究においては、一方の極に生成文法に代表される生成論的パラダイムがあり、他方の極に認知言語学に代表される認知論的パラダイムがあります。本領域の大きな特徴の一つは、生成論と認知論の両パラダイムに学生が接することにより、その基本的な言語観と方法論を十分に理解したうえで、両者を統合するような形で研究を進めていくことができる点にあります。

さらに、本領域では、英語を一つの個別言語として研究するだけではなく、特に日本語と比較対照することにより、言語の普遍性と相対性の問題に結びつけて研究することも重視されています。

このような特徴をもつ本領域では、学生がどのような領域を専門的に研究するにせよ、(1)英語学・言語学に関する基本的知識の修得、(2)言語データに対する洞察力の養成、(3)明晰な議論の仕方の修得、(4)批判的精神と自律的思考力の養成の4点を念頭においた研究指導が行われます。これは、(1)-(4)の要件が説得力のある独自の研究を行うための必要条件と考えられているからです。

本領域では、授業以外に、「英語学談話会」という、学生・教員参加による研究会を月に一回行っており、毎年秋には、「筑波英語学会」という研究発表大会を開いています。また、学生による読書会も積極的に行われています。特に筑波英語学会については、研究発表大会の開催、学会誌の刊行など組織の運営を学生が中心になって行っています。学会誌はTsukuba English Studies(通称TES)という英文研究誌で、全国的な学会の機関誌とともに、論文発表の一つの場となっています。TESについては、編集委員が責任をもって論文の審査および編集にあたっており、掲載論文はすべて一定の水準を保つものとなっています。

このように、本領域では、教員からの研究指導に加えて、学生自身が自主的に研究活動に取り組む体制も伝統的に確立されており、学生同士が切磋琢磨しあいながら研究が進められています。本領域には、在学中にアメリカの主要大学に留学し博士号を取得した人もいますし、また、本研究科に博士論文を提出し博士号を取得した人も多数います。本領域の出身者は、英語学研究者として、全国の国公私立大学で英語学・言語学・英語などを教える職についており、現在、その多くが学界で精力的に活躍しています。
